How to redact a PDF safely
A safe redaction workflow does two things well: it removes the sensitive content, and it forces you to verify the exact file you are about to send. If either step gets skipped, mistakes happen.
Start with the visible risk
- Identify every name, number, address, or block of text that should not leave the file.
- Check rotated pages, scans, and page edges carefully — those are easy places to miss something.
- Assume review matters just as much as the redaction step itself.
How to do it
- Open Redact and draw boxes over every area that needs to be removed.
- Export the redacted file as a burn-in copy.
- Open the downloaded PDF in a separate viewer and try selecting or copying near the redactions.
What to do next
- If hidden metadata also matters, run Sanitize on the redacted output.
- Rename the file if the original filename itself reveals something sensitive.
- Keep the original and the cleaned copy separate so you do not mix them up later.
