PDF Bench

Add page numbers after merging PDFs

If several source PDFs need to become one finished packet, page numbering usually belongs at the end. Number too early and you will have to redo it after the page order changes.

Why the order matters

  • Merging changes where each page lands in the final packet.
  • Organizing can still remove, duplicate, or rotate pages after the merge.
  • Numbering last gives you one clean sequence from the first page to the last.

Simple workflow

  1. Merge the source PDFs into one file.
  2. Organize the result if the page order still needs cleanup.
  3. Open Page Numbers and stamp the final file once the sequence is settled.

What to watch for

  • Footer text that the page numbers could overlap.
  • A custom start value if the packet begins mid-document.
  • Whether the file will be printed and needs a highly visible position.
